Journalism that cannot be switched off.
Open Newsrooms is an early-stage open-source project to help independent journalists and media organisations own their identity, their work and their audience, without depending on any platform, host or provider they don’t control.
-
Platforms change the rules. Accounts, archives and audiences can disappear overnight. (SafeJournalists and partners, Sept 2026)
Own your identity, work and audience.
A newsroom should be able to move between platforms, services or hosts without losing the identity, archive and relationships it has built.
-
Sources and data are increasingly at risk online, yet digital security is still treated as a specialist skill. (MFRR, Sept 2026)
Safe by default.
Journalists should not need to become security experts to work safely. Protection should be built in from the start.
-
Publishing depends on a single company, account or server staying available.
Hard to erase.
No story should disappear because one company decides it should, or one server goes down.
This is early. That’s why we’re talking to journalists now.
Open Newsrooms is not a finished platform. Some of the technology already exists through OpenFederation; the rest still has to be designed, tested and proven in real newsrooms. If you are an independent journalist, editor or media organisation, or you support independent media, tell us how you work: the tools you use, where they fail you, and what would actually help.
Anonymous and encrypted. If you’d like to be more involved, the end of the questionnaire tells you how.
Open Newsrooms is an initiative of Resonator Foundation, a Sofia-based non-profit working on open technology, research and public-interest infrastructure. It builds on OpenFederation and is developed in the open.
